Speed Skating NWT introduces new concussion management platform

Yellowknife, September 4, 2024 – Speed Skating NWT (Northwest Territories Amateur Speed Skating Association) has adopted a new digital platform to enhance concussion management and athlete safety. The online tool, CAPT (Concussion Awareness, Protocols, and Training), aids coaches in recognizing and responding to potential concussions in real-time, ensuring a comprehensive and consistent approach to player care.

Concussions have become a growing concern in sports, with a reported increase of over 200% in cases across Canada. This issue affects approximately 1 in 10 youth athletes annually, with women and girls experiencing higher rates of concussions compared to their male counterparts.

“In our sport, due to the high speeds, an athlete can hit the boards hard if a fall occurs or suffer an injury from a high-impact crash. The circumstances that lead to concussions can be so varied, it’s key that our coaches, parents, and athletes are aware of the signs and symptoms,” said Alex Clinton, President of Speed Skating NWT. “The safety of our athletes is of primary concern and concussions are always taken seriously. By adopting CAPT, we’re not only enhancing our concussion management but also leading by example in youth sports safety.”

CAPT, developed by Agile Intelligence Solutions (AgileIS) in partnership with the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) and Parachute, provides a structured process for reporting and managing concussions. The platform allows for immediate documentation of incidents, followed by a clear, step-by-step protocol for evaluation, removal from activities, and safe return to play. CAPT is accessible from any mobile device, making it a convenient tool for coaches, parents, and athletes.

“We are excited to announce the launch of CAPT with Speed Skating NWT, marking a significant step forward in prioritizing player safety,” said Terry Kell, CEO of AgileIS. “This platform offers a proactive and streamlined approach to concussion management, helping organizations respond promptly and accurately to any incidents. CAPT centralizes communication and protocol management, ensuring effective concussion care.”
